Spinning a Yarn!

When I first began to learn of weaving, it was natural and predictable to encounter the spinning of yarn- another ancient art. Even my four years of Home Ec. in High School never mentioned the process-amazing considering an entire semester of each year was spent on garment construction! NO clothing would exist if yarn was/is not spun. I became really interested when I saw a Turkish Spindle. <y husband and I plan to visit Turkey next year and have watched a Turkish series for five years that has piqued our interest in the culture and history of the Turks and Kurds. Often in this series the women are spinning, weaving amazing textiles, rugs.

I tried and tried to spin off and on over the last year. I watched lots of Youtube tutorials, but just couldn't seem to make it work. Then last week I watched a Drop Spindle tutorial that made things clear! Woo hoo! And I immediately set to spinning my first yarns.

I purposely spun fat, bumpy, uneven yarn, which is called "Art Yarn". I did two batches: Water and Fire- 5.5 yards

This was so much FUN!

I just had to do a second one.

Since I had planned to weave a series of Desert Scenes, I chose colors that I thought would work for them.

NEXT: weaving these into artistic tapestries. Then I will create more Art Yarns and begin to sell them!
